KHADIJAH'S CARAVAN presents WHAT THE HEART SEES:
A Photography Workshop Series for Muslim Youth in Queens

WHO: QUEENS MUSLIM YOUTH AGES 14-18
When: Saturdays Feb 6th to May 29th
Time: 2PM-4PM
Where: TBA

What the Heart Sees is a photography workshop series created for
Muslim youth in New York City. The first in a series of workshops that
focuses on Muslim youth, this program will work closely with those
living in Queens who are within the ages of 14-18 years old. The 16
week long program will enable the participants to connect photography
with activism. As American Muslims continue to have the glare of the
spotlight on their communities, it becomes imperative that we take
control of how we are pictured and who tells our stories. A
significant voice that often goes missing is the voice of our youth.
Out of this need to create a safe space in which they can discuss
topics that impact their daily lives and can effectively advocate for
themselves, What the Heart Sees was created.

Inspired by verses 11 and 12 from Surah Al-Najm of the Quran, which
states "The heart did not lie in what it saw/Will you then dispute
with him his vision?", What the Heart Sees aims to bring together
photographers, activists, and Muslim youth to collaborate on how to
highlight the challenges and opportunities they face in the spaces
that they occupy - the self, home, school, and neighborhood. The
participants' photography and narratives will turn our gaze towards
what they see and envision for themselves and their world.
